ROBO-ONE is an onion!
By that, I mean to say that ROBO-ONE is like an onion. It has many
layers. If you peel one layer off, underneath you find another
I have seen ROBO-ONE many times, and it was always enjoyable. But, in
March I attended ROBO-ONE for three days. I tried to watch very
carefully. And, I was able to discover a big secret.
Honestly, I found out that ROBO-ONE is an onion!
An onion looks very common to a passerby:
Many people see ROBO-ONE on television, or in a magazine. They think
it's just robots fighting. They may find it interesting. They may
wonder if there is a Bob Sapp robot. But, they only see the outside
skin of the onion.
An onion has many layers:
The first ROBO-ONE layer is entertainment. It is interesting and
exciting. It's like robot "K-1". It catches your eye. Majingaa
suddenly hits Dynamizer. Dynamizer falls. The audience gasps.
OmniZero.2 grabs its opponents head, then throws it over. Everyone is amazed.
ROBO-ONE is excitement. ROBO-ONE is entertainment.
The second ROBO-ONE layer is education. It stimulates the fans to
learn more. How can Maeda-san get such wonderful performance from
OmniZero.2? How did Nakamura-san design WR-07 as a real Transformer
robot? I saw Rayerd-X! I wanted to know how Asurada-san could control
ROBO-ONE stimulates education.
ROBO-ONE makes competitors want to learn more. If they win, they want
to improve their skill. If they lose, they want to improve their skill
even more. Even the top ROBO-ONE developers were surprised by
OmniZero.2. How did Maeda-san do it? The robot seems like it is
breathing while sleeping! ROBO-ONE promotes their learning.
Another layer is logical thinking and presentation skill.
Foreigners don't know this layer at all. Demonstrate your robot in
only 2 minutes! The top judges and a large audience are watching!
Manage your time! Manage your presentation! Manage your robot! Manage
your heart! Manage your fear!
The clock never stops. There is no extra time. If your robot has a
problem, you have to manage it. It's like an Olympic figure skater
slipping on the ice. No matter what happens, you have to continue to the finish.
The next layer is social networking.
Usually, without ROBO-ONE, the players wouldn't know each other.
Because of ROBO-ONE they become a community. They chat with each
other. They share ideas. They share experiences. They help each other.
ROBO-ONE is a special community.
The next layer is family.
The 'inside' part of this layer is the ROBO-ONE players like Maru
Family (King Kizer and King Kizer Jr.), Sugiura Family (Dynamizer,
RETRO, and Dynamizer Jr. aka Kappa), Sumii Family (ARIUS and Ali
Keown) and many more. The whole family plays.
The 'outside' part of this layer is the audience. The first rows and
the floor in front were crowded with families. Mothers, fathers, and
their young children. They all have the same desire. They want to play ROBO-ONE.
ROBO-ONE is a family event.
ROBO-ONE has many layers. It feeds many people, in many different
ways. If you remove one layer, underneath you find another new and
delightful layer. Honestly, I don't know how many layers ROBO-ONE
actually has. I'm still peeling, eating, and enjoying it.
An onion welcomes everyone:
Many sports have strong rules and restrictions. For example, Mao Asada
wasn't allowed to go to Torino. She was too young. Still, she could
have entered ROBO-ONE. ROBO-ONE has no age, sex, income, or physical
barriers. If you are rich or poor, young or old, an athlete or
disabled, Japanese or foreigner, its okay. All are welcomed. ROBO-ONE
An onion is strong:
When you see robots like Yokozuna Great or MYRO-3 in the ring, they
are so strong. You can feel it even watching many meters away. And,
its more than just the power of the robot. The robot creator is strong
also. Dr. GIY designs and makes special motors and gears. MYRO-3, from
Korea, is unbelievably strong and powerful. Sometimes it's an
advantage for him. Sometimes it's a disadvantage. But even when he is
standing still, you can feel his strength and power. ROBO-ONE is
strong and steady.
An onion is soft:
The ROBO-ONE player seems to be a tough competitor on the outside.
But, inside they are soft, sympathetic, and have a deep heart. Many
times I watched a player reach into their toolbox and offer a part to
a competitor that needed it to fix their robot. 30 minutes later, they
might be fighting each other in the ring. ROBO-ONE is soft. It has a
human spirit and tender heart.
An onion is sweet:
The right word for ROBO-ONE is sweet. Some people may say "It is
cute", ,but I think that "It is sweet" is the best choice. For
example, AMATERAS is really sweet. Or, BE-TIKKU from Japan Tent is
sweet. It reminds me of Charlie Chaplin without a hat, walking around
twirling his cane!
And how about Sumii Family with Ali Keown? They really like to put on
a show. I always look forward to their next creation. Last year for
the Grand Prix final their Christmas theme was wonderful. This time
when I saw how Ali Keown was dressed I thought he must be Ken
Matsudaira! I waited to hear the Matsu Ken Samba music! ROBO-ONE is
An onion is savory. An onion is surprising.
ROBO-ONE is full of tasty, exciting surprises. Who could have
predicted that Majingaa would have to fight Majingaa Jr.? How did they
feel? What were they thinking about in the ring?
MYRO-3 is so large. OmniZero.2 seems small in comparision. How can
they fight? It must be impossible. But, Maeda-san attacks from the
side. MYRO-3 loses its balance! It's so exciting.
Every hour, every demonstration, every battle brings some new,
wonderful surprise. ROBO-ONE is very tasty and surprising.
An onion grows in the earth, but its leaves reach for the sky:
ROBO-ONE was born on earth. ROBO-ONE was born in Japan. Now it reaches
for the sky, for outer space. Some people may laugh, but not me.
I was a very young boy in October, 1957. One night my father took me
outside. He pointed to a bright point of light in the dark sky. It
looked like a fast moving star. But, it was made by man! It was born
on the earth. Now it was traveling with the stars. It was SPUTNIK. It
changed my life forever.
I believe ROBO-ONE in Space is possible. ROBO-ONE was born on earth,
now it reaches for the stars - for outer space.
An onion needs special care from good farmers:
The ROBO-ONE panel of judges seems very special. I watch them as they
judge each demonstration. It's easy to see that all of them love
robots. They love ROBO-ONE. They pay close attention to the every
detail. They notice the smallest thing. Even when they give a critical
comment, they are not severe. They offer their comments as
encouragement. They want the competitors to try harder and become
better. They are genuine mentors.
And, they laugh a lot.
I first saw ROBO-ONE several years ago. At that time I didn't know
what to think about Nishimura-san. He seemed very stiff and formal. I
thought he must be cold. Since then, I have watched him at
competitions. I think I have begun to understand his character better.
During the March competition, I feel he opened up and showed his true
heart. When he talked about ROBO-ONE in Space, I could see the sparkle
in his eyes. I could see the dream that he encourages.
At the end of the competition, he made a speech. His words, and his
body language, were full of deep feeling. He showed his spirit, his
true self. People seem to respect him, and they listen to him. They
will follow him because he believes so deeply. And, because he shows
it to them, they will follow him.
An onion's taste is remembered for a long time:
My ROBO-ONE memories are so strong. They are so clear. I never worry
about forgetting them. They are real treasures for me.
An onion makes you want to enjoy it again:
I want to enjoy ROBO-ONE many, many times in the future.
Truly, ROBO-ONE is a delicious and wonderful onion!
